Amazon Kindle DX Global is Available in Canada! (Revised)

Amazon now ships the kindle DX to Canada.

A few weeks before Chistmas, Canadians were finally given a chance to purchase the popular electronic reader, the kindle Global Reader. Now, Amazon has added their premium electronic reader, the kindle DX.  Canadians embraced the kindle Global and sales were reported to be strong over the holidays. 

Amazon does however have some stiff competiton in Canada. Sony offers their line of eReaders (the Sony Touch and Sony Pocket) at selected brick and mortar shops such as Best Buy and Future Shop. Then, after Christmas, Sony began to offer its newest electronic reader,  the Sony Daily Edition which offers a large touch screen. Amazon is clearly addressing that challenge. The kindle DX in Canada is more expensive than the original, priced at $489 US – an increase of $230 US per unit over the original kindle but comparable to the basic ipad.

Technology fans and e-reader consumers felt snubbed last year when the kindle was released internationally in 100 countries and Canada was left off the list. More than an underestimation of the kindle’s popularity north of the border, the release required a deal with a wireless carrier in Canada to enable e-book downloads without connection charges.

Overcoming the limitations of the kindle DX in Canada

For the release of the kindle DX in Canada free Internet isn’t yet available but customers can access over 400,000 books in the Amazon bookstore through 3G wireless coverage.

Canadian credit cards are so far not supported on the Amazon.com webpage that manages the kindle DX in Canada but creative consumers report various methods to buy and load the kindle DX in Canada without the need for official coverage – such as shipping to US addresses, loading the kindle DX in Canada with Amazon.com gift cards that can be purchased with Canadian credit cards and so on… proving that where there’s a technological will, there’s a way.
